Margaret’s Buildings
Bath
Bringing a celebrated department store back to life.
Key Challenges
-
Repurposing a grade 2 listed building that was constructed in various phases. -
Preserving the historic shop details whilst converting the property into a shop, home and guest quarters.
Our Solution
Working in collaboration with Berdoulat, our scheme restores and adapts the historic fabric with great care, blending contemporary craftsmanship with conservation principles to create a refined and characterful home.
The Design
To meet the requirements of this complex brief we assessed the significance of every existing structural and historic element of the building. The plans for the shop were to honour its Victorian heritage as the home of Cater Stoffel and Fort (the West country’s answer to Fortnam and Mason’s). With this in mind we worked with specialist craftsmen and women to sensitively restore the counters and hardware ready for new customers.
In order to make the site into a family home bigger changes were needed at the back of the property. We transformed an infill extension by creating a double glazed replica of the existing ceiling lantern and adding a second floor to create space and light for the family.
Finally a complete refurbishment of the old mews house provides a a useable space to be rented out to support the shops income.
