St Mary-at-Finchley

Barnet

A roof to protect and preserve a historic church.

Key Challenges

Our Solution

A conservation-heavy re-roofing project addressing long-term fabric performance and environmental resilience. Works include the installation of lamb’s wool insulation, bespoke graded slate, and new zinc roofing.

The Design

The project combines heritage-led detailing with improved thermal performance to extend the life of the building.

Missing roof tiles were replaced with matching Welshland Cumbrian slates, and the remaining copper and lead roofing replaced with zinc. To further deter thefts we also installed hidden valley and box gutters.

When it came to insulating the building, natural vapour permeable sheeps wool insulation was used in existing roof voids. In other areas we used a ‘warm roof’ build up with modern high performance insulation fitted just above the original roof line in a way that allowed for maximum thermal efficiency without affecting the overall look of the church. All the re-roofing details follow Historic England guidance to ensure any changes respect the buildings heritage without damaging its structure.

The finished works protect the building now and will keep it safe in the future, making it warmer, more environmentally friendly and less attractive to potential thieves.
