Coopersale Road
Hackney
Creating a home fit for a family's future.
Challenges
-
Reconfiguring the narrow, dark footprint to work harder for residents. -
Balancing original features with contemporary additions in the design. -
Working with limited construction access to the narrow site in a busy neighbourhood.
Our Solution
Maximising the potential of a restricted plot to improve flow, increase daylight and increase space without compromising the victorian features the owners love. Adding a rear extension and new bedrooms to ensure this house grows with the family who live in it.
This project put the family at its heart. Working closely with them we mapped out what they needed and what they wanted for their home now and in the future.
Starting in the basement we reconfigured the space to create a cosy media room, installing a lightwell to draw in natural light. Next, a rear extension was integrated into the ground floor, using skylights and large glass doors to connected the interior to the garden and flood the the ground floor with light. A new kitchen was created to improve flow and increase functionality to the more communal part of the home. Next we turned the disused loft space into a new bedroom allowing the floor below to be reconfigured and an ensuite added to the existing master bedroom.
The clean lines of our scheme meant new interventions felt intentional but understated, reinforcing the rhythm of the terrace while transforming the experience of space internally. The final house now fits the needs of family life without losing the Victorian features the owners loved.
