Eldon Road
Kensington
Upgrading a dated townhouse to become a modern vicarage.
Challenges
-
Creating a space that could act as both a residential home and a place for parish engagement. -
Gaining planning permission in a high value conservation area. -
Maintaining the look and feel of the street in the design. -
Working to a tight budget and design guidelines.
Our Solution
Focusing on flow we extended and upgraded the property to provide new vicarage facilities. Adding an additional floor for private living space whilst creating more adaptable public-facing rooms below.
Our Design
Our design is composed and purposeful, intended to balance the need for openness and intimacy. On the ground floor a rear extension helps to improve flow and increase flexibility, providing a welcoming space to host a variety of parish gatherings. Improving its connection to the garden also brings an increased sense of calm to the interior.
By adding an additional floor we have introduced a more discreet private space for those who live in the vicarage. Allowing residents to move from their public facing role to their private life with ease.
Externally, the extension takes its cues from the scale and material character of the surrounding street. Rather than compete with its context, the design seeks to sit comfortably within it—acknowledging the dignity of its setting while remaining understated.
The result is a residence shaped by stewardship and care: a place that supports community, respects privacy, and balances ecclesiastical purpose with the practical needs of everyday urban life.
